Windows 3. 0, but primarily consisted of bugfixes and multimedia support. It also excluded support for Real mode, and only ran on an 8. Later Microsoft also released Windows 3. Windows 3. 1 which included all of the patches and updates that followed the release of Windows 3. Meanwhile, Microsoft continued to develop Windows NT. The main architect of the system was Dave Cutler, one of the chief architects of VMS at Digital Equipment Corporation (later purchased by Compaq, now part of Hewlett- Packard). This successor was codenamed Cairo. In hindsight, Cairo was a much more difficult project than Microsoft had anticipated and, as a result, NT and Chicago would not be unified until Windows XP. Windows 9. 5. Chicago was designed to have support for 3. OS/2 and Windows NT, although a 1. The Win. 32 API first introduced with Windows NT was adopted as the standard 3. Win. 16 compatibility being preserved through a technique known as . A new GUI was not originally planned as part of the release, although elements of the Cairo user interface were borrowed and added as other aspects of the release (notably Plug and Play) slipped. Microsoft did not change all of the Windows code to 3. Additionally it was necessary to carry over design decisions from earlier versions of Windows for reasons of backwards compatibility, even if these design decisions no longer matched a more modern computing environment. These factors immediately began to impact the operating system's efficiency and stability. Microsoft marketing adopted Windows 9. Chicago when it was released on August 2. Microsoft went on to release five different versions of Windows 9. Windows 9. 5 - original release. Windows 9. 5 A - included Windows 9. OSR1 slipstreamed into the installation. Windows 9. 5 B - (OSR2) included several major enhancements, Internet Explorer (IE) 3. FAT3. 2 file system support. Windows 9. 5 B USB - (OSR2. USB support. Windows 9. C - (OSR2. 5) included all the above features, plus IE 4. This was the last 9. OSR2, OSR2. 1 and OSR2. OEMs that would preload the OS onto computers. Some companies sold new hard drives with OSR2 preinstalled (officially justifying this as needed due to the hard drive's capacity). The first Microsoft Plus! It also introduced the first version of System Restore, which allowed users to revert their system state to a previous . The first version of Windows Movie Maker was introduced as well. Windows ME was conceived as a quick one- year project that served as a stopgap release between Windows 9. Windows XP. Many of the new features were available from the Windows Update site as updates for older Windows versions. As a result, Windows ME was not acknowledged as a distinct operating system along the lines of 9. Windows 9x series. Windows ME was criticized by users for its instability and unreliability, due to frequent freezes and crashes. A PC World article dubbed Windows ME the . Where NT4 suffered from a lack of USB support, Plug and Play support, and no support for Direct. X preventing users to play contemporary games on Windows NT 4, Windows 2. USB and plug and play support than any version of Windows 9x. The release of Windows XP signalled a change of direction for Microsoft, bringing the consumer and business operating systems together. One by one, support for the Windows 9x series ended, and Microsoft stopped selling the software to end users, then later to OEMs. By March 2. 00. 4, it was impossible to purchase any copy of any Windows in the 9x series. The last version of Internet Explorer for Windows 9. Internet Explorer 5. Internet Explorer 6 with Service Pack 1 was the last version to which the browser could be upgraded in Windows 9. ME. Today, even open source projects such as Mozilla Firefox will not run on Windows 9x without rework. This area of memory contains code critical to the functioning of the operating system, and by writing into this area of memory an application can crash or freeze the operating system. This was a source of instability as faulty applications could accidentally write into this region and with that halt the operating system. By running multiple applications, applications with numerous GDI elements or by running applications over a long span of time, it could exhaust these memory areas. If free system resources dropped below 1. Windows would become unstable and likely crash. Hardware- specific settings are also stored in the registry, and many device drivers use the registry to load configuration data. Previous versions of Windows used files such as AUTOEXEC. BAT, CONFIG. SYS, WIN. INI, SYSTEM. INI and other files with an . INI extension to maintain configuration settings. As Windows became more complex and incorporated more features, . INI files became too unwieldy for the limitations of the then- current FAT filesystem. Backwards- compatibility with . INI files was maintained until Windows XP succeeded the 9x and NT lines. Although Microsoft discourages using . INI files in favor of Registry entries, a large number of applications (particularly 1. Windows- based applications) still use . INI files. Windows 9x supports . INI files solely for compatibility with those applications and related tools (such as setup programs). The AUTOEXEC. BAT and CONFIG. SYS files also still exist for compatibility with real- mode system components and to allow users to change certain default system settings such as the PATH environment variable. The registry consists of two files: User. System. dat. In Windows ME, Classes. Virtual Machine Manager. Its primary responsibility is to create, run, monitor and terminate virtual machines. The VMM provides services that manage memory, processes, interrupts and protection faults. The VMM works with virtual devices (loadable kernel modules, which consist mostly of 3. Both the VMM and virtual device drivers run in a single, 3. The VMM provides multi- threaded, preemptive multitasking. It runs multiple applications simultaneously by sharing CPU (central processing unit) time between the threads in which the applications and virtual machines run. The VMM is also responsible for creating MS- DOS environments for system processes and Windows applications that still need to run in MS- DOS mode. It is the replacement for Win. Windows 3. x, and the file vmm. Vx. D, including VMM. DOS kernel). Software support. Thus, the security model is much less effective than the one in Windows NT. One reason for this is the FATfile systems (including FAT1. FAT1. 6/FAT3. 2), which are the only ones that Windows 9x supports officially, though Windows NT also supports FAT1. FAT1. 6 (but not FAT3. Windows 9x can be extended to read and write NTFS volumes using third- party Installable File System drivers. FAT systems have very limited security; every user that has access to a FAT drive also has access to all files on that drive. The FAT file systems provide no access control lists and file- system level encryption like NTFS. In contrast, while Windows 9. This enables viruses and other clandestinely installed software to integrate themselves with the operating system in a way that is difficult for ordinary users to detect or undo. The profile support in the Windows 9x family is meant for convenience only; unless some registry keys are modified, the system can be accessed by pressing . Windows 9. 5's default login dialog box also allows new user profiles to be created without having to log in first. Users and software can render the operating system unable to function by deleting or overwriting important system files from the hard disk. Users and software are also free to change configuration files in such a way that the operating system is unable to boot or properly function. Installation software often replaced and deleted system files without properly checking if the file was still in use or of a newer version. This created a phenomenon often referred to as DLL hell. Windows ME introduced System File Protection and System Restore to handle common problems caused by this issue. Network sharing. Vx. Ds usually have the filename extension. Our view of such a culture, taking account of world- wide experience, is that it should help: To protect and enhance representative and participatory democracy; To support civil society and its interaction with government; To promote economic and social development and the advancement and empowerment of disadvantaged people and communities; To shift power and authority from central government to provincial and local government, within a framework of national norms, standards and values; To locate responsibility for achieving efficient and effective delivery of services to the lowest possible level; To ensure that ethical and professional standards are developed and maintained throughout the public service and all other organs of state; To ensure that the functions and records of government are open to public view and appraisal; To secure accountable and transparent stewardship of public resources, so as to build the kind of society envisaged in the 1. Constitution; To reward achievement, acknowledge failure and give redress to grievances. It is our hope that this report will assist in moving the public service in this direction. However, the final responsibility for implementing our recommendations, if accepted by the President, rests with the Office of the President to appoints officials or establish an agency to oversee their implementation. The WPTPS proposed the creation of a number of new and additional structures to add impetus to the transformation process, and to ensure in particular that it was . These structures included a Presidential Review Commission, to be established as a matter of urgency, together with a number of other structures such as the Public Sector Transformation Forum and Departmental and Provincial Transformation Units. The PRC was officially titled The Commission of Inquiry Regarding the Transformation and Reform of the Public Service. Its terms of reference were published on 8 March 1. Government Gazette No. Government Gazette No. November 1. 99. 5. Act 1. 08 of 1. 99. Together these documents constitute the framework of the Commission's remit to provide for the creation of what the mission statement of the WPTPS describes as a . This mission was in turn based on a redefinition of the role of the state and its relationship to civil society, encompassing a partnership between the two rather than the essentially antagonistic relations which prevailed in the past. The PRC's key role, therefore was to assist in the processes of transforming the state and its principal executive arm, the public service, from an instrument of discrimination, control and domination to an enabling agency that would consolidate democracy and empower communities in ways that were demonstrably accountable and transparent (WPTPS, para 2. This would involve, among other things, making recommendations for overcoming many of the serious challenges and constraints facing the transformation process, many of them inherited from the previous regime. These included: The lack of racial, gender and occupational representativeness; The lack of clarity and communication in respect of the vision for change; Centralised control and top- down management. Poor productivity; The low level of service delivery, especially to the majority population; A disempowering work ethic; The absence of clearly defined roles and responsibilities; The lack of effective co- ordination and communication among the key agencies of transformation. You’ve been brainwashed. Brainwashed by clever marketing and the classic underpromise- and- overdeliver strategy employed by Microsoft to fix the mistakes they made with Vista. AutoCAD Architecture. AutoCAD® Architecture 2008 is compatible with Windows Vista and runs on the 32-bit Vista OS or as a 32-bit application on a 64-bit Windows. I know, I know, everyone told you Vista was bad. You maybe even used Vista pre- SP1, on a “Vista Capable” machine way back when it launched and concluded that it was horrible. Or, maybe you heard all the bad press and skipped on it altogether? Stuck with XP, then switched straight to 7. Is that what you did? Well, regardless, I am convinced that Vista is the superior operating system. So vastly superior, that I am going out of my way to ensure that it replaces all the systems that I have been tricked into installing Windows 7 on. At work, at home, and for my clients. I am going to make an argument in this article as to why I believe that Vista remains superior. I challenge someone to list 7 reasons why Windows 7 is better than Windows Vista. Actual reasons. Those could easily be implemented into Vista, if it were not abandoned in the wake of Windows 7 by the new CEO, Steve Ballmer. So, we begin with a mini history lesson: Windows Vista was a major disaster. Microsoft suffered from heavily over promising on features (remember Win. FS?) and failing to live up to their own hype; and they really hyped it up. Naturally, normal people don’t care or know when a new Microsoft operating system is launched, but the tech community does. So, to over- promise and under deliver, and miss your self- imposed deadlines again and again, the disappointment becomes palpable. At the time, 6. 4- bit processors were becoming more ubiquitous, and Windows XP 6. Edition had a plethora of issues with drivers and was not widely adopted — so they were under immense pressure to release the OS. Development of Windows Vista occurred over the span of five and a half years, starting in earnest in May 2001, prior to the release of Microsoft's Windows XP. Vista Beta 2 came out in 2. If you looked at it funny, or moved the mouse too quickly, it would crash. It was completely unusable, but Microsoft insisted that it was intentional, and that they were planning to fix all of the bugs at once, at the end, prior to RTM. They did, although there was still the issues of heavy disk I/O in the final RTM as well as a large number of driver issues in the final versions. Much of the problems with Vista stemmed from an overzealous Search Indexer, incomplete drivers from third party manufacturers, UAC, and underpowered systems. RAM was still moderately expensive at the time, and Vista did not work very well with only 1. GB, which was common on low- end systems. After Beta 2, Microsoft shipped release candidate versions and finally the RTM. They continued to fix all of the issues rapidly, releasing patch after patch. All the while, Vista was hammered in the press, blogs and forums repeatedly for problems stemming from the aforementioned. This negative press was not without merit. Vista was truly very slow, and despite the improvements, they felt minor in the face of a computer that was so severely hampered. Especially when the computer was branded as: Vista Capable. Finally, with Vista Service Pack 1 (2/2. However, plagued by the hasty launch, not enough enticing features over XP, and an insipid ad campaign (“the wow starts now“), there were very few who gave it a second review. Microsoft later attempted to “prove” that they had fixed Vista with the Mojave Experiment, in which they secretly video taped people who had heard that Vista was bad, and had them interact with a supposed “new” operating system codenamed “Mojave.” Evidently, over 9. XP and/or Vista, and expressed shock/surprise when informed that they were actually using regular . Of course, bias is to be expected. After the release of Service Pack 2 (4/2. Windows 7. None of this ever made it to the press because Windows 7 was under- hyped, under- promised and over- delivered by releasing early, since Microsoft learned their lessons with Vista. Moreover, Microsoft’s “I’m a PC” ad- campaign for 7 was well executed. So, what’s wrong with Windows 7? Why have I become so negative about it? Here’s 7 reasons why I think Windows 7 is a downgrade from Windows Vista (asterisks denote a subjective comment): 1. Windows 7 removes features. What’s missing? Well, where’d the Quick. Launch go? Oh, right, it got consumed into the massive start menu. Where’d the Show Desktop icon go? Moved, to the right hand side (this drives a lot of people batty, believe it or not). Windows Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Dream. Scene, just to name a few, no longer come with the OS, they have to be downloaded manually with “Windows Live Essentials” (except for Dream. Scene, which is totally gone. All system tray icons are hidden by default. Is this a problem? I think it is. Microsoft’s attempt to unclutter the taskbar by hiding all third party systemtray icons is a nuisance. How many times have you had to try to explain to someone to “click the little arrow to the left” over the phone to a client, family member, or friend? Hiding all systemtray icons does little in the way of solving the “problem” of the systemtray. As a result, I often find myself just showing all icons on the systems I administer and repair. Libraries. After much annoyance, I finally get libraries. I understand why they exist. I even think it’s a semi- cool idea . Try and copy the path of a file you’re looking at within a Windows 7 Library into another Explorer dialog box. What’s that? You can’t? Well that’s aggravating because everytime you click a shortcut like Music on your start menu, it takes you to the music Library, even if you just have one Music folder! Can you replace the shortcut on the Start menu to go directly to your Music folder? I won’t add a separate section, but Home. Groups annoy me in a similar fashion. I’m sure they’re great for some people — but in general, I just get a lot of “what’s homegroup?!” from people trying to do very basic filesharing across their networks. Windows Media Player 1. Have you used Windows Media Player 1. It’s pretty simple to use. Yes, the defaults are still annoying, but the interface is vastly superior. Try it yourself. Use WMP 1. The illogical layout of the software is mind boggling to me. This isn’t exactly a Windows 7 issue per se, but since Microsoft made a specific decision to remove WMP 1. I find it worth mentioning. Also, it looks like you can fix it here. Search. This, for me, is the real trouble with Windows 7. In Windows XP, you can download the optional search indexer from Windows Update. Its heyday was really with the search add- on version 2. In Vista, Microsoft took it to the next level by deeply integrating the indexer and the UI throughout the operating system. Vista’s search solution, once the Indexer was optimized with SP1+, is very powerful and incredibly easy to fine tune. Observe the control you can exert over your search in Vista: Now, let’s juxtapose this with Windows 7’s search “improvements”: So, here is what I can’t do with Windows 7’s search: – Force a search in a non- indexed, or partially indexed location. So, let’s say you just added a folder and want to do a quick search in Windows 7. So you’re screwed. This is a constant problem that I run into all the damn time.– Change the search path without first performing a search, and then scrolling to the very bottom of the search results. Who was the genius who designed this?– Perform complex filters quickly. In 7, I have to use that awkward drop- down menu to manually select each filter, and then scroll back to the left to change my search parameters. This is incredibly cumbersome and unintuitive. Totally fails the grandma test. In Vista, if I want to find a song, I just type one word of the song and then click the “Music” button and bam — it appears immediately.– Inconsistent search- related glitches (see also Bugs, #6, below) which for whatever reason cause known search results not to materialize. Video evidence of this that I documented is here, on a fully patched, legally licensed, MSDN version of Windows 7 Ultimate. I’m not the only one complaining, either. This is a real problem that simply didn’t exist before 7.– Oh, and see how the text becomes blue in the search box once I type the word “in”? Well that’s because Windows 7 thinks that I am using a search “operator,” and thus it is not returning any results. If I type the exact same search query into Vista’s search box, it would return results. In order for me to make 7 search for the word “in” I have to put it in quotes in order to “tell” 7 to search it, and not to use it as an operator. Do you think your clients are going to figure that out? I doubt it. 6. Bugs that never get fixed. Microsoft has the capability to fix problems. They proved that with Vista. In my years with Vista, I observed Microsoft fix the operating system relatively quickly. Each problem slowly disappeared, and by the time SP2 hit, nearly everything that was a concern vanished. Yet somehow, that isn’t happening with Windows 7. My biggest #1 problem with Windows 7 is the Explorer refreshing bug. Have a look at that link. You’ll find that this is a bug that has persisted throughout every single version of Windows 7, and despite innumerable complaints, it isn’t fixed. Windows 7 launched in 2. I have lost track of how many times I have had to explain to clients that the reason why the file that they saved to the desktop/folder isn’t appearing is because it sometimes won’t refresh automatically and that they have to right click and hit refresh or press F5. Of course, F5 won’t work on Microsoft keyboards because you have to first press F- Lock to enable standard keyboard behavior. This is aggravating, and Microsoft appears unable or unwilling to fix bugs of this magnitude, despite their brilliant engineers on staff. Other bugs are equally frustrating. For example, after installing a completely legal MSDN version of Windows 7 Ultimate, with keys from Microsoft, activated and operating for a few months, Microsoft released an optional hotfix to determine if your specific instance of Windows had been illegally activated.
